Beta Hydroxy Beta Methylbutuyrate HMB is a ketoic acid that is a metabolite from the essential, amino acid leucine branch. HMB is thus created when leucine is metabolized inside the body. About 5 percent of the leucine, we get in our body goes to the production of HMB.
HMB counteracts the breakdown of muscle tissue in such a way that the substance inhibits a particular enzyme that has a degrading effect on your muscles. same as with people without training experience, it has been seen that HMB seems to be able to reduce exercise-induced muscle damage. Both endurance and strength training have seen lower measured levels of the catabolic markers CK (creatine kinase) and LDH (lactate dehydrogenase) compared to a placebo. HMB is also thought to act as anabolic in the body. Here it is believed that HMB can increase the phosphorylation of mTOR, which in turn increases protein synthesis.
HMB has a half-life of about 21/2 hours and then goes down to base levels after about nine hours. This has led the researchers to conclude that intakes of HMB should be done both in conjunction with exercise, to reach a peak during the workout, as well as evenly spread throughout the day to try to have a constant high level.
